The other day, do not really know why (maybe to stay halfway installing Picassa), my girlfriend when you log on to Windows on your laptop gave an error when inputting the password of the user: Error in the service profile user login.

Error in the service user profile login windows

Obviously the password was well placed, but the error persisted. It's annoying because there's nothing you can do, just log in with another user (the inivitado for example). It seems to be occurring in laptops and netbooks with Windows version Vista or Windows 7.

If you've got here do not panic! It is no virus, it is a Windows error that is easily solved. Like you, I also searched the internet and found a quick and effective solution. There are several ways to solve it, I will explain step by step the method that has worked for me:

1. Restart the computer in Safe Mode: This is necessary to start the computer with an administrator user (since we can not access our own) and make the changes that will solve the problem.
To do this, we restart the computer and the principle of all repeatedly pressed the "F8" key. You should leave a menu like the image and then select "Safe Mode".

menu windows safe mode boot options

You might come out a menu with blue background (computer's BIOS), if so press ESC and then F8, now the menu should get out of the picture.

2. Access the Windows Registry: Once you have logged into safe mode (here you will work the key to your user lifetime) go to Start and type "regedit" in the box "Search". Press "Enter":

regedit windows

In the Windows registry it is all settings, do not touch more than what you indicated here. Go opening the folders in this order:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
Windows NT
CurrentVersion
ProfileList
windows registry regedit

Once inside the "ProfileList" folder we see several subfolders. Which interest us are starting with S-1-5 (SID key) followed by a long number. There will be a couple of folders with the same number (except the final) and one of them will have the .bak extension.
Inside that folder with the .bak you have to find the item ProfileImagePath and double clicking. It should show something like "C: \ users \ yourusername". If your user name appears so good.

3. Modify the Windows registry: Next is to exchange the .bak a key to the other:

For this, we will rename the first NO says .bak: right click on its name, rename, we add .ba the end and touch Enter.

regedit

Click the right mouse button on the folder with .bak and then click Rename. Remove .bak the end of the folder name, and then press ENTER.

regedit

Click the right mouse button on the folder with .ba and then click Rename. .bak .ba Changes by the end of the folder name, and then press ENTER.

regedit

NOTE: If instead of two folders, one that says we only .bak at the end, you simply delete the .bak. And if you have multiple folders, you just have to work with that contain your username to notice the ProfileImagePath key as explained above.

4. Change the .bak folder: Finally click the folder without .bak in the details pane, double-click RefCount, enter 0 and hit OK:

Refcount regedit

In the right pane, click the folder without .bak, double-click State, type 0 and hit OK:

Refcount regedit

5. Restart Windows: We have already made all the necessary changes. Now we just have to reboot the notebook and pray :) It will seem restart the longest history but when you ask for the key to your user and goals, should run you. To me it has worked.

If you have any doubt, put it in the comments and try to help.
