What to do when beep codes occur
Step 1: Remove dust from cooling areas of your computer
Step 2: Perform a power reset when your computer does not start

If your computer makes one or two short beeps before starting, it is normal and your computer tells you that BIOS startup was successful. If your computer beeps and does not start, it is probably a more serious hardware problem. This support document contains information that can help you learn more about the problem and how to fix it.

What to do when beep codes occur

Usually an LED or beep code indicates that a basic function could not start. A basic function might be reading memory, displaying video or to send information to a hard drive. The most common problems that cause LED and beep codes are memory-related failures and increased temperature due to an accumulation of dust in critical cooling areas.
Follow these steps when your computer emits a LED or beep code:

Step 1: Remove dust from cooling areas of your computer

If your computer is new and never used, you can skip this step.
Over time dust may accumulate in the air vents to cool the equipment. Too much dust can block airflow and cause them to overheat or fail important components. Before attempting to solve the problems indicated by beep codes, it is important to remove any dust that may have accumulated.
With eye protection, use compressed air or the end of a vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the vents, preferably outdoors.

Step 2: Perform a power reset when your computer does not start

If your computer does not start, first do a full reset of energy. Hopefully, the problem is temporary and can be resolved by following these steps:
  1. Disconnect all peripheral devices such as printers, media cards and USB storage devices.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the computer.
  3. Hold down the power button for at least 15 seconds until the LED on the power supply is turned off.
  4. Reconnect the power cord and press the Power button .
  5. Look for units or rotating fans hear.
  6. If the computer still does not start and beeps, advance to the next section.

Step 3: Write down the LED or beep code to the troubleshooting
Step 4: Match the sound code to a suspected hardware component for troubleshooting

Step 3: Write down the LED or beep code to the troubleshooting

Follow these steps to record the error conditions on paper.
  1. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
  2. Note the Power button on the computer and enter your state. If the light flashes, note how many times between pauses.
  3. Pay attention to whether the equipment emits loud beeps. If so, note the type and number of beeps between pauses. For example: two long beeps followed by one short.
  4. Write down on paper what was observed to remember the error when doing the next steps.
NOTE: The boot or post codes have changed. Earlier computers use a series of beeps. The amount and type of beeps depend on the age of the equipment and the manufacturer of the motherboard and BIOS. With the development of EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) environment, notebooks HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario manufactured in 2011 or later use blinking LEDS to identify hardware component reporting an error during startup. These codes are not valid on previous models.

Step 4: Match the sound code to a suspected hardware component for troubleshooting

See section herein with the description of the codes to find out which component has the problem. You can use this information in the next step to try to resolve the problem. Or, if your computer requires service, you can give this code and this information to the person who treats you.
